From a clear blue sky

I have just finished reading From a clear blue sky by Timothy Knatchbull.  I found myself unable to put it down, and when I did put it down the thought of it still rattled around my brain.

In the book Timothy talks about his long journey, from identical twin hood, through trauma and on through recovery not only from the trauma itself but the devastating loss of what to him, was a part of him, his brother. Continue reading

Why it pays to leave your ego at the door

I couldn’t help but be drawn into the discussions on television last night about Tony Blair’s book. Regardless of personal opinions and political skulduggery the subject that continually came around was the difficult relationship between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

Considering all that occurred during their tenure this discord must have had a profound effect on them, what energy was lost through watching their backs whilst trying to get their ideas progressed.  In turn this must have had an effect on all of our outcomes. Continue reading

Oh dear, dreaming of Twitter!

I woke up with a bit of start in the night, in the dream I was having there was now a need to tag more information on each twitter! In my dream I was almost shouting ‘when will it stop so that I can keep up with all this’. Awaking, thankfully, from the dream I mulled over the reason for this anxiety to have appeared in my dream. I had not been on twitter that day but I did have a growing pile of imperative ‘to do’s’. Was this just reflective of all business owners? Continue reading

Do you get what you expect?

I took up an invitation last night and went along to an event at a wonderful venue overlooking the City of London. I knew very few people at the outset, by the end I had met some fascinating people from a variety of worlds and had enjoyed some very thought provoking conversations.

My point is that when I started the evening I felt tired and really not the mood to speak to lots of strangers. So in full knowledge that we often get what we expect, I got a grip of myself and decided that I was going to make the most of the event. Continue reading

Break the Habit

When we go to work with any team one of the first steps is to look at habits. What are the team doing without even thinking? Even the smallest changes can make huge differences to outcomes.

So often we follow a pattern of behaviour that we have not consciously thought through as to whether it is still having the beneficial effects it once did. A simple question of ‘why am I doing this?’ or ‘why am I doing this now?’ and often get us to consider quicker and more efficient ways to conduct our lives.

Changes in routines can often bring energy and enthusiasm back, meetings held at different times, chaired by different people, talking to somebody new can all have a surprisingly beneficial effect. Continue reading

Leader or follower?

Just gone 7 am and already I am learning something new. Obvious stuff, but self-knowledge usually is. I don’t like following! I think I was brought up to believe that it is good to fit in and be a team player that is what ‘nice’ people do, especially girls. But I am bored of that and want to lead or at the very least be inspired to follow by someone inspiring. Continue reading

How to deal with problems

It is not what happens to you that counts, it is how you react to what happens to you, especially when you are faced with unexpected problems.  Here are just some observations we have gained from working with successful people over the years. Continue reading

It’s the truth, honestly

We all like to feel we are honest in our dealings with others and are often outraged when others behave in anything less than worthy manner. But I wonder how honest we actually are?

I sat and watched Cat on a hot tin roof with my daughter the other day, if you are unfamiliar with the film it revolves around a day in the life of one family and what they refer to as mendacity. The film was made in the fifties so this is rather an old fashioned term but basically translated into modern language as dishonesty or lies. Continue reading

What are you missing?

I seem to spend a great deal of time working with people who actively resist being in the present moment. Often much of their behaviour is unconscious, worrying about what might potentially be coming their way or what they might miss. Continue reading

All change please

Change seems all around us.  Obvious of course but sometimes the speed is alarming.  You can swing from just going along in your routine and then be into an almost recognisable life.

When the changes are unwelcome how can we manage them?  Look to a higher meaning and wonder what life is trying to teach us and look for the benefits of the situation?  Easier to do in hindsight I think.  Continue reading
